Adding/unlinking a page to/from the menu

Updated on

Content types that must be added manually to the menu

In almost all cases, a new web page must be given a place in the menu of the website. There are only a few exceptions.

Sometimes Drupal automatically makes the page accessible in the website. This is the case with the following content types:

  • News
  • Event
  • Course
  • Training
  • Employee
  • Blog post
  • Building
  • Location
  • Room

If you create one of the above content types, you don't have to do anything else to place the produced web page in the menu of the website. The page can be found automatically in, for example, the overview of bachelor's and master's programs, or the list of all university employees.

If it concerns one of the following content types, then manual action must be taken to make the pages appear in the menu:

  • Landing page (with or without menu)
  • Index page
  • List page
  • Basic page

For the content types below, it depends on the circumstances whether the page must be placed in a menu manually:

  • Service, manual or regulation: if it can be accessed via the rubric overview (by linking the content type to a rubric), the page does not have to be added to the menu. If it is made accessible elsewhere on the website, it has to be.
  • Testimonial: if it concerns a testimonial that belongs to a study programme, it does not have to appear in the menu. Is it a testimonial that is not linked to a study programme content type? Then do add it to the menu.
  • Project: if it concerns a project that is accessed via an overview page, such as a list page with all research projects, then the page does not have to be in a menu. In other cases, it does.

Adding a page to a menu

When you create a new page that should appear in a menu, please submit a request for this to Lenny de Rooy or via [email protected]. Specify which page it concerns (the node url) and indicate where in the menu the page should be placed. We will then create a new menu item for you. Never do this yourself, even if you have the rights to do so!

Remove an unpublished page from the menu

If a page was linked to a menu item and you unpublish and delete the page, the menu item must also be deleted. After unpublishing a page, the menu item automatically disappears for the visitor, but it is still present in the back-end of the website. To prevent the menu from becoming a mess of current and no longer existing pages, you must notify us when a menu item is no longer needed. Report this toLenny de Rooy or via [email protected]. Specify which page it concerns and state where in the menu the page used to be.
