Drupal offers the option to add keywords to content, which makes it possible to:
- Filter content shown in a content block (such as 'latest items' or 'news and events') on this keyword;
- Filter content shown in an overview (such as the central news overview, research projects overview or the employee agenda) on this keyword.
Filtering overviews on keyword prevents the need to create separate list pages.
Adding keywords
You cannot create keywords yourself. If you want to filter your content in this way, request the keyword via [email protected].
After your keyword has been created, you can enter it in the keyword field of a content type. Add the keyword to all content that you want to show after the keyword filter is applied, for example all events with a certain subject. Please note: not all content types contain the option to add a keyword. This can be done for amongst others news items, events, blog posts, projects and trainings.
Application guidelines
To prevent the over using of keywords, we have established criteria for when keyword requests will be granted.
Keywords are created for content that is aimed at an important customer journey / target group and that meets the customer-oriented online principles. The keyword must have a clearly defined scope, in other words, it must be clearly described for what purpose it is used. In addition, the content that is tagged with this keyword must be regularly updated, so that manually maintaining a list / overview would be a lot of work. The keyword should be used for a long time. Finally, there are no better methods to bundle the content.
If your application does not meet these criteria (but does adhere to the customer focused online guidelines), you can add a manually compiled list of relevant content to your page.
A concrete example of a situation in which we do not assign a keyword is when you want to bundle a number of news items about a certain subject, with the aim of convincing a potential customer that we are doing well in that area as an organisation, so that they want to work with us. This is an unfocused and ineffective way of 'sending' information, without attuning it to the way in which a visitor likes to receive information and can be convinced. People do not like to read long texts and will not quickly draw conclusions from them. Instead of offering an overview of news, it is more effective to describe concretely what you do in a certain area and why we do it well. In other words: specifically describe the message you want to convey, instead of letting the visitor find it out for themselves.
Applying filters
Filtering content blocks
After you have provided the content that you want to show with a keyword, you can add a content block to a compiled page (such as a landing page) that shows a list of other content, such as the 'News or events' and 'Latest items' blocks. As a filter, you choose the keyword that you have added to the relevant content.
The content block will then only show the content that is tagged with the keyword.
Filtering overviews
If you have more content tagged with a keyword than can be shown in a content block, you can link to one of the overview pages (such as the news overviews, agendas or the research projects overview) with the keyword applied as a filter.
You can do this by linking to the URL of the overview page, followed by the addition '/keyword/' plus the name of the keyword. Capital letters in the keyword must be converted to lower case and underscores are omitted.
For example: you want to filter the employee agenda so that only events that are introductory meetings for new employees are shown. You have requested the keyword 'Staff_Orientation_meeting' for this. The link that you use to send visitors to the overview filtered on this keyword will then be:
https://www.ru.nl/en/staff/agenda/keyword/stafforientationmeeting
If you do not want to manually compose the URL, you can also open the relevant overview page in the browser. Make sure you are logged in to Drupal with an account that has customer journey management rights. You will now see a list of available keywords below the search field:
Click on the relevant keyword. The overview will be filtered by this keyword. You can now copy the URL in the browser bar and use it for your link.
Is the keyword not there? Then there is probably no content of the type that this overview shows, tagged with the keyword, or you do not have sufficient rights to see keywords.
What visitors see
The list of keywords does not appear on the left side of the overview page among all the other filter options. Visitors cannot apply the keywords themselves. They can only see that an overview has been filtered by keyword, because they see the keyword below the search field. They can remove the applied keyword to see all content in the overview, but they cannot apply the keyword again afterwards.
